Thompson tops WorldSSP300 Free Practice ahead of Championship deciding weekend
Australian beats title leader Mahendra in closing stages of Jerez session
The final round of the season kicked off at the Circuito do Jerez – Angel Nieto, and it was Carter Thompson (Fusport-RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki) who rode to the top of the standings in the morning Free Practice Session, beating current Championship leader Aldi Mahendra (Team BrCorse) by 0.3 seconds. The #50 rider set a lap time of 1’52.067s in the final stages of the 25-minute session, claiming the top spot ahead of Mahendra and Antonio Torres (ProDina Kawasaki Racing) who was the third fastest rider.
Perfect conditions greeted the riders on Friday morning, and it was Italian rider Marco Gaggi (Team BrCorse) who just missed out on a top three ranking, setting the fourth best time, whilst the #22 Marc Garcia (KOVE Racing Team) claimed firth overall, ahead of Yamaha’s David Salvador (MS Racing) who rounded off the top six.
Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) and his teammate, Phillip Tonn, took seventh and eighth, whilst Julio Garcia Gonzalez (KOVE Racing Team) and Galang Pratama (ProGP NitiRacing) completed the top 10 as they now look ahead to the afternoon Superpole session at the Spanish track.
