HEAD-TO-HEAD: how do riders stack up against each other in 2024?

Thursday, 27 June 2024 06:57 GMT

A third of the season is in the history books with plenty of stories, but now it’s time to look at the teammate battles so far in 2024

Four rounds into the 2024 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship are done and dusted and it’s a great time to look at how teammates are competing against each other, with coming out on top against your teammate one of the first goals for everyone. With 12 races in the bag, there is a clear picture of how things are developing.

BULEGA CLOSES THE GAP: Bautista leads 7-5, #11 on top in the standings

Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing - Ducati) had started to pull clear of his rookie teammate, Nicolo Bulega, going 7-2 up in races after Assen. However, that gap has closed to 7-5 following Misano, where the #11 was ahead in all three races and moved ahead of Bautista in the standings. Bulega also leads 4-0 in Superpole sessions, with the one-time race winner on average more than seven tenths clear. Their average finishing positions are closely matched, with Bulega on 3.75 and Bautista on 4.75.

RAZGATLIGOLU ON TOP AT BMW: six wins and a Championship lead

Toprak Razgatlioglu's (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) transition from Yamaha to BMW has been almost seamless, with the #54 leading the standings and claiming half of the wins so far in 2024. An average finishing position of 2.55 is the best on the grid and he also has one of the biggest advantages over his teammate, leading Michael van der Mark 10-2 in races this season while also being 4-0 ahead in Superpole.

ADVANTAGE, ALEX LOWES: the #22 extends his lead over Bassani

Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) continues to thrive at KRT in 2024, leading teammate Axel Bassani 11-1 in races and 4-0 in Superpole. Despite seemingly making a step at Misano, ‘El Bocia’ has only finished ahead of Lowes when the #22 crashed out at Assen. In Superpole, the gap on average is around seven tenths in the Brit’s favour while he’s also averaging a finish of 3.91 this year after 11 top six finishes in 12 races.

LOCATELLI LEADS AT YAMAHA: 9-3 up for ‘Loka’

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Prometeon Yamaha) continues to hold the advantage over teammate Jonathan Rea after four rounds, leading the six-time Champion 9-3 in races and 3-1 in Superpole. Locatelli averages a P6 finish when taking the chequered flag, while it’s 10.67 for Rea. The average positions for Superpole go in Locatelli’s favour too, as he averages 7.75 while it’s 10.00 for his teammate. Locatelli has taken all of the team’s podiums this season so far.

TWO ROUNDS COMPARED AT HONDA: Lecuona has the advantage

Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) has only taken part in races at two rounds this season, limiting what can be compared to Xavi Vierge. In the two rounds we can look at – Barcelona and Misano – it’s Lecuona who leads 4-2, while he’s also 2-0 up in Superpole. As shown over the past two seasons, the pair are closely matched in Superpole with an average gap of 0.095s over the two rounds that can be compared.
